THE GEOMANCER SERIES

Synopsis

PRIMA MATERIA is an Occult Noir novel by Lewis L Mason. Set in contemporary London, this thrilling and disturbing story of a vocal atheist's descent into madness and terror blends elements of gritty realism, wry urbanity, neo-noir intrigue and occult horror.

Written with a strong Weird Tales aesthetic but developed in a contemporary postmodern setting, the prose is well-paced, with strong characterisation and punchy dialogue. With hard-hitting horror and scenes of a sexual nature, this novel contains elements which some sensitive readers may find disturbing.

PRIMA MATERIA is the first instalment in the GEOMANCER SERIES of novels by the Occult Noir author Lewis L Mason. The novels are set mainly in a contemporary period of two months in the Autumn; every chapter is a day and a date, with reference to the quarters of the Moon. The ancient technique of Terrestrial Astrology - otherwise known as Geomancy, the Divination by way of Elemental Earth - is an interweaving theme throughout the series, but one that leads to other themes of increasing depth. Every book cover is emblazoned with a Geomantic Figure. The choice of Geomantic Figure in every case is not arbitrary, dear reader...

Not at all arbitrary...

Synopsis

A defiant and sceptical journalist wages a personal war against religious delusion and superstition - a crusade for rational thought that threatens to destroy his own...

Michael Evans, pro journalist - brash, witty, cynical - is the host of the popular Radio Two religious programme Finding Faith, a primetime broadcast airing balanced and rational debate on all subjects religious, mystical and supernatural - the programme promotes this, but Michael Evans doesn't. Michael Evans is at war.
Aggressive investigations into church corruption... the discrediting of popular psychics... public humiliation of spiritual leaders... all in the name of his personal Crusade for Reason, and the elimination of superstition and dogma from society, one myth peddler at a time.
But in the benighted streets and subterranean depths of London, something is stirring... something most foul... something that will surge up from those depths and plunge Michael and his colleagues into undeniable, abject horror, and the terrifying realisations that will dawn upon them too late...
That when the haunting begins, belief has no meaning. That when the evil begins, denial has no purpose. That when the dying begins, reason gives no comfort. And when the Faceless rise and stalk across the city, there is nowhere to run.

Synopsis

'Without warning, she just appears. Sometimes as a shadow. Sometimes like a... thing made of flesh. Staring. Waiting. My mother. Lain cold in the ground these twenty years...'

Michael Evans began a personal crusade against religion and superstition, using his radio show Finding Faith as a tool to attack and bring down his latest target - the post-modern super-guru Krishnaraj. But in doing so, Michael has fallen down a very deep rabbit hole... one leading him into the foul underbelly of organised crime, political subterfuge, and the evils of malefic occultism. And the deeper he falls, the more people around him seem to die... The Black Lodge of the Faceless are at work - a vipers' den of concealed wickedness, led by the ruthless Pater Nija. And they have been given unspeakable power over the Elements – through the bestowal of the Black Dispensation. Howling Empusae hunt in the streets. The spectral Watchers stalk the shadows. The distorted corpse Pales rise to set upon the living. The waters stir with the unholy presence of Those Whose Hair Gathers Filth. And while the people of South London see their world going to hell, Michael cowers in his cupboard, hiding from his mother... his long-dead mother...
